The Value of Well-Built Side Projects

There are two things that have been instrumental in my career so far: meeting and staying in touch with people, and building side projects.

That sounds like a bold statement from someone who’s never made much money off his side projects, but what they have brought me is worth much more than the few hundred dollars a week I might have reaped. I’ve used side projects to refine architectures, practice new languages, test out frameworks, and get faster at making good technical decisions. Often in my job as a manager I don’t have as much time to code as I’d like, so keeping in touch with the hands-on work that developers do via side projects has been very important.
