China as a globalization leader

After Xi Jinping’s speech at the World Economic Forum this week, it’s becoming clear that China wants to maintain the globalization status quo and limit border closings to the West:

Pursuing protectionism is just like locking one’s self in a dark room. Wind and rain may be kept outside, but so are light and air. — Xi Jinping

I don’t know if China as a globalization leader is a good thing though. Their humanitarian record is dismal and continued efforts to annex sovereign states seems aggressive. That said, if the US and Britain are backing off the world’s stage in trade, China might be ready to fill the vacuum.
